Francis Webb (19251973) grew up in North Sydney with his paternal grandparents, who encouraged his love of music, books and the sea. In 1942, during his final year of secondary school, his writing first appeared in the Bulletin, which led to friendships with Douglas Stewart, Nan McDonald, Rosemary Dobson and Norman Lindsay, who illustrated his debut collection A Drum for Ben Boyd. In 1943 he joined the Air Force, completing his training as a Wireless Air Gunner in Canada in late 1944. After a sea voyage from Canada to England in 1949, he suffered the first of a series of breakdowns which increasingly restricted his life but not his prodigious poetic gifts.

No one book has done more to define modern poetry than T. S. Eliot's Collected Poems 1909-1962. The pinnacle of a lifetime's curation by Eliot himself, it was first published in 1936, and then revised to form the present edition of the text, published in 1963. But throughout its many printings, discrepancies, authorial revisions and printers' errors have introduced anomalies that have served to undermine the authority of the edition. Now, following years of careful scholarship and preparation for The Poems of T. S. Eliot by Christopher Ricks and Jim McCue, a reliable text has been established that enables a corrected and newly reset edition of Eliot's Collected Poems to be presented for the very first time.

Adrienne Rich was the singular voice of her generation and one of our most important American poets. She brought discussions of gender, race, and class to the forefront of poetical discourse, pushing formal boundaries and consistently examining both self and society.

This collected volume traces the evolution of her poetry, from her earliest work, which was formally exact and decorous, to her later work, which became increasingly radical in both its free-verse form and feminist and political content. The entire body of her poetry is on display in this vast volume, including the National Book Award–winning Diving Into the Wreck and her prize-winning Atlas of the Difficult World.

The Collected Poems of Adrienne Rich gathers and memorializes all of her boldly political, formally ambitious, thoughtful, and lucid work, the whole of which makes her one of the most prolific and influential poets of our time.

The Collected Poems and Drawings of Stevie Smith is the essential edition of modern poetry's most distinctive voice.

When Stevie Smith died in 1971 she was one of the twentieth-century's most popular poets; many of her poems have been widely anthologised, and 'Not Waving but Drowning' remains one of the nation's favourite poems to this day.

Satirical, mischievous, teasing, disarming, her characteristically lightning-fast changes in tone take readers from comedy to tragedy and back again, while her line drawings are by turns unsettling and beguiling. In this edition of her work, Smith scholar Will May collects together the illustrations and poems from her original published volumes for the first time, recording fascinating details about their provenance, and describing the various versions Smith presented both on stage and page. Including over 500 works from Smith's 35-year career, The Collected Poems and Drawings of Stevie Smith is the essential edition of modern poetry's most distinctive voice.

Nobody heard him, the dead man,
    But still he lay moaning:
I was much further out than you thought
    And not waving but drowning.

A groundbreaking new edition of Dylan Thomas's collected poetry, published to commemorate the centenary of the poet's birth.

Like Shakespeare and Joyce before him, Dylan Thomas expanded our sense of what the English language can do.

Rhythmically forceful yet subtly musical and full of memorable lines, his poems are anthology favourites; his 'play for voices' Under Milk Wood a modern classic. Much-loved by The Beatles and Bob Dylan, he is a cultural icon and continues to inspire artists today.

This new edition, released to commemorate the centenary of Thomas's birth, collects all of his poems together for the first time in a single volume. With recently discovered material and accessible critique from Dylan Thomas expert John Goodby, it looks at Thomas's body of work in a fresh light, taking us to the beating heart of his poetry.

Zwicky is one of the world’s finest poets; her sophistications of form and theme remind one of Akhmatova, Szymborska, Adrienne Rich and William Blake. With poise and control, she tracks the personal encounter with the weight of history and the obligation to declare a position. - JOHN KINSELLA

In her poetry, Zwicky, the ex-concert pianist, technically adroit, dramatic and profoundly serious, is there alongside the joker, the edgy ironist making wry asides against the world, patriarchy and herself. Her formal poems sit easily beside her mostly short-lined, tightly wrought free verse. Her cadences are a delight. - KATHERINE GALLAGHER

Zwicky’s poems deal with such over-whelming intimations of mortality—and much more than intimations—while striving for and attaining a breathtaking authority and stubborn subjectivity of voice. - LYN MCCREDDEN

She has her eye on all creation. - GEOFFREY DUTTON

Edited with an Introduction, Chronology, Notes, Bibliography and Glossary by Roy Booth, Royal Holloway College, University of London.

John Donne (1572-1631) is a poet of concerted emotional and intellectual force, whose strenuously original approach to the subject matter, diction and form of verse re-made English poetry. Donne's poetry combines paradoxical wit, scientific and theological learning with the rhythms and diction of spoken language. Crises of love, conscience, and faith are the great concerns of his poetry which is by turns exalted or disenchanted, direct or oblique, morally profound or outrageously spiteful.

This edition makes available the whole of Donne’s English poetry, and includes a new introduction, chronology, notes and up-to-date bibliography.

With an Introduction, Notes and Bibliography by Anne Varty Royal Holloway, University of London.

Wilde, glamorous and notorious, more famous as a playwright or prisoner than as a poet, invites readers of his verse to meet an unknown and intimate figure. The poetry of his formative years includes the haunting elegy to his young sister and the grieving lyric at the death of his father. The religious drama of his romance with Rome is captured here, as well as its resolution in his renewed love of ancient Greece. He explores forbidden sexual desires, pays homage to the great theatre stars and poets of his day, observes cityscapes with impressionist intensity.

His final masterpiece, 'The Ballad of Reading Gaol,' tells the painful story of his own prison experience and calls for universal compassion. This edition of Wilde's verse presents the full range of his achievement as a poet.

With an Introduction, Bibliography and Glossary by Michael Irwin, Professor of English Literature University of Kent at Canterbury.

Thomas Hardy started composing poetry in the heyday of Tennyson and Browning. He was still writing with unimpaired power sixty years later, when Eliot and Yeats were the leading names in the field. His extraordinary stamina and a consistent individuality of style and vision made him a survivor, immune to literary fashion. At the start of the twenty-first century his reputation stands higher than it ever did, even in his own lifetime.

He is now recognised not only as a great poet, but as one who is widely loved. He speaks with directness, humanity and humour to scholarly or ordinary readers alike.

With a new Introduction by Cedric Watts, Research Professor of English, University of Sussex.

    W. B. Yeats was Romantic and Modernist, mystical dreamer and leader of the Irish Literary Revival, Nobel prizewinner, dramatist and, above all, poet. He began writing with the intention of putting his 'very self' into his poems. T. S. Eliot, one of many who proclaimed the Irishman's greatness, described him as 'one of those few whose history is the history of their own time, who are part of the consciousness of an age which cannot be understood without them'. For anyone interested in the literature of the late nineteenth century and the twentieth century, Yeats's work is essential.

This volume gathers the full range of his published poetry, from the hauntingly beautiful early lyrics (by which he is still fondly remembered) to the magnificent later poems which put beyond question his status as major poet of modern times. Paradoxical, proud and passionate, Yeats speaks today as eloquently as ever.

With an Introduction by Antonia Till.

William Wordsworth (1771-1850) is the foremost of the English Romantic poets. He was much influenced by the events of the French Revolution in his youth, and he deliberately broke away from the artificial diction of the Augustan and neo-classical tradition of the eighteenth century. He sought to write in the language of ordinary men and women, of ordinary thoughts, sights and sounds, and his early poetry represents this fresh approach to his art.

Wordsworth spent most of his adult life in the Lake District with his sister Dorothy and his wife Mary, by whom he had four children. His remarkable autobiographical poem 'The Prelude' was completed in 1805, but was not published until after his death, and it is included in this full edition of Wordsworth's poetry.
