A passionate and personal book about the writer's own love for a controversial architectural style.

Whether you love or hate brutalist buildings, this book will explain what it is about them that elicits such strong feeling. You will understand the true power of concrete and of mammoth-sized buildings, but also some of the more subtle aspects of brutalist buildings that you may not have known or considered.

Brutalist architecture, which flourished in the 1950s to mid-1970s, gained its name from the term ' Beton-brut', or raw concrete - the material of choice for the movement. British architectural critic Reyner Banham adapted the term into 'brutalism' (originally 'New Brutalism') to identify the emerging style. The architectural style - typified by buildings such as Trellick Tower in London and Unite D'Habitation in Marseille - is controversial but has an enthusiastic fan base, including the author who is on a mission to explain his passion.

John Grindrod's book will be enlightening for those new to the subject, bringing humour, insight and honesty to the subject but will also interest those already immersed in built culture. Illustrated with striking drawings by The Brutal Artist, the book is divided up into a series of mini essays that explains the brutalist world from a human aspect (John grew up amongst these buildings), as well as an architectural, historical and even pop cultural angle. The book journeys from the UK to discover brutalism and its influence around the world - from Le Corbusier's designs in Chandigarh, India, to Lina Bo Bardi's buildings in Brazil.

People have been living in small spaces for centuries, for reasons of practicality, mobility, flexibility or personal choice. More recently, tiny homes have become the answer for many who need somewhere affordable to live and who possess the creativity and energy to make something different. A small home can be relatively cheap to build or convert, and gives its owner choices, reflecting the way they want to live and their concern for the impact they have on the environment. Tiny homes can also be stunningly beautiful and imaginative. They ask their owners to be discerning about what belongings they have – what is necessary and what is beautiful. The choices are individual and can be seen as part of a movement away from money and property-slavery to a more simple and connected way of living. Gill Heriz has brought together a collection of some of the most incredible small homes, from containers in the city to cabins in the countryside. A traditional Mongolian yurt provides off-grid living for its owners, and a portable cabin offers a chic, flexible space. There is a reclusive shack set in woodland, a converted mountainside bothy, and a log cabin pod near the coast. What all the owners have in common is dedication to living well on a smaller footprint.

The origin story of Melbourne's Gothic churches.

The Invention of Melbourne defines the relationship between an architect of genius, William Wardell, and the first Catholic Archbishop of Melbourne, James Goold, an Irishman educated in Risorgimento, Italy.

Their partnership produced St Patrick's, the largest cathedral of the 19th century anywhere in the world, and some thirteen churches, decorated with hundreds of Baroque paintings. These ambitious policies coincided with the Gold Rush, which contributed financially to their success.

The contribution made by Wardell and Goold to the built environment of Melbourne remains significant. Together, they actively and creatively shaped the city that became a major international metropolis.

Japanese homes speak to the soul and provide a contemplative environment from which to experience the world. Japan Style offers rare glimpses into twenty exquisite traditional homes in Japan. The lavish photographs in this volume demonstrate how Japanese design achieves a timeless tranquillity using a few very simple, natural elements.

The wabi-sabi ideal, translated loosely by Frank Lloyd Wright as a rusticity and simplicity that borders on loneliness, is considered the epitome of sophistication in Japanese interior design. The houses in this book invite us to rethink the wisdom of our hurried modern lifestyle and return to a simpler, slower life. The quintessential Japanese aesthetic can be seen in a 100-year-old minka farmhouse, an old merchant's machiya townhouse in Kyoto, a sprawling country Samurai villa, and in a modern seaside cottage.

This book offers insights for architects and homeowners alike by providing inspiring and surprising alternatives, relevant to the design of homes anywhere in the world today.
