Leonard French (1928–2017), who created the great stained-glass ceiling at the National Gallery of Victoria, was widely regarded as the most public Australian artist of his day. By the early 1970s this outgoing working-class boy from rough and tough inner-Melbourne Brunswick had become top of the artistic heap, cock of the walk: his monumental glass commissions, murals and paintings were critically acclaimed and his commercial success was firmly established. A feisty contrarian with an eloquence that belied his humble origins, he delighted in publicly roasting the Australian art establishment, seeing its art historians, curators and caviling newspaper critics as his natural enemies. Yet suddenly in 1974 this public figure decided to shun the spotlight and seek solitude in Central Victoria. Why? All is revealed in this magnificent book by his long-time friend, Reg MacDonald.

When he died in 1992 Brett Whiteley left behind decades of ceaseless activity-some works bound to a particular place or time, others that are masterpieces of light and line.

Whiteley had arrived in Europe in 1960 determined to make an impression. Before long he was the youngest artist to have work acquired by the Tate. With his wife, Wendy, and daughter, Arkie, Whiteley then immersed himself in bohemian New York. But within two years he fled, having failed to break through.

Back in Sydney, he soon became Australia's most celebrated artist. He won the Archibald, Wynne and Sulman prizes in the same year - his prices soared, as did his fame. Among his friends were Francis Bacon and Patrick White, Billy Connolly and Dire Straits. Yet addiction was taking its toll- Whiteley struggled in vain to separate his talent from his disease, and an inglorious end approached.

"The purpose of drawing is to make freshness permanent. Out of billions of seconds of futility, occasionally, sparks of the life force are immutably held forever."

Brett Whiteley wrote these lines in his 1985 notebook about the activity at the very heart of his life as an artist, drawing. For three decades Whiteley bewitched his audience with his mercurial character and unconventional behaviour, producing original and challenging works such as The American Dream and Alchemy. He was an indefatigable draughtsman, putting great energy into his drawings, which stand alone as a vital part of his oeuvre. In his finest drawings he concentrated all his talents to produce incandescent moments of vision. Nowhere is he more pure than in his remarkable drawings. In these we find the essence of Brett Whiteley.

Brett Whiteley Drawings includes 180 of Whiteley's most important drawings, from early views made as a student to the last series of works made in Paris in 1989, before his untimely and tragic death. Also illustrated are pages from Whiteley's notebooks, in which he drew and wrote his reflections on art, painting and drawing. The book has been created by Lou Klepac, who first discussed the idea of this book with the artist before his death, and subsequently organised the exhibition 'On the Road to Berry', of Brett Whiteley and Lloyd Rees drawings in 1993. There is an essay about the drawings, quotes from the artist and a fascinating interview with Michael Johnson, edited by Barry Pearce, about Whiteley's time at Lintas in Sydney, when they were colleagues and close friends.

AUTHOR: Lou Klepac is an art historian; he is the author of a number of books including 'Lloyd Rees Drawings', 'Russell Drysdale', 'John Coburn', 'William Robinson', 'James Gleeson', 'Nora Heysen' and 'Horace Trenerry'. Among the many exhibitions he has curated are: Sicket Paintings; Contemporary Australian Drawing; Sickert Drawings, Russell Drysdale Drawings, Russell Drysdale Paintings, The Road to Berry Lloyd Rees and Brett Whiteley drawings, Giorgio Morandi Paintings and Etchings, La Serenissima the fascination of Venice; Nora Heysen retrospective; James Gleeson Beyond the Screen of Sight; Donald Friend a charmed life. In 1980 he was made a Cavaliere della Repubblica Italiana; in 1996 he was awarded an OAM and in 2006 the University of Sydney conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Letters (Honoris Causa). 180 drawings

This is the first book about the major Australian sculptor Bronwyn Oliver. “I wanted to write an old fashioned art book, one that tells the story of the artist’s life from beginning to end,” says author Hannah Fink. “But I also wanted to write about the creative process – how Bronwyn made things, why she made them. What drives someone to make art?”

Born on a farm near Gum Flat in Northern New South Wales, Oliver grew up in country-town Inverell. She won the Travelling Art Scholarship to study sculpture at Chelsea Art School in London, returning to win numerous awards including the Moët & Chandon Fellowship.

While many of her contemporaries began making installation art, Oliver worked within the traditional discipline of sculpture. She was an intensely ambitious artist whose works seem to grapple almost effortlessly with the big questions of life. Her organic yet strangely human sculptures are coveted by collectors for their eloquent beauty.

“But Bronwyn’s aim was not to create beautiful things for their own sake,” says Fink. “The beauty of her objects comes from the thinking behind them.”

Oliver’s death ten years ago cast a shadow over the beauty of her work and her reputation. The woman that emerges from this book is intelligent, funny, modest, hard-working, and, in the words of Roslyn Oxley, “never boring”.

Clare Belfrage has built an extraordinary career as a glass artist. 'Clare Belfrage: Rhythms of necessity' is the first major publication that explores the significance of her contribution to contemporary international glass art. Exhibited across the world, Belfrage's glass vessels explore the pulse and flow of forces that shape the natural world as well as the lived patterns of the everyday. A similar sense of rhythm underpins the structure of this book: an interleaving of short texts and stunning photographs of Belfrage's vessels that reveal her story to date. Belfrage's art practice is grounded in her experience of family life. She grew up in a large family in a house suffused with music and from early childhood enjoyed camping, which instilled in her a love of nature and the more-than-human world. As she says about looking closely at nature, 'the big feeling that "small" gives me is intimate and powerful'. Some of Belfrage's most celebrated series reveal her engagement with the rhythmic movements of glass-making, reflecting the dynamism and energy of the natural world. As well as showcasing her award-winning glass vessels, 'Clare Belfrage: Rhythms of necessity' explores the bodily processes of glass blowing, particularly the specific skills of fine cane drawing for which she is renowned. Belfrage demonstrates her finely honed techniques in workshops and public forums across the international glass art community. Her practice stands out for pushing the limits of glass in new and sensitive directions.

Ceramics is back in a big way, experiencing a steady surge of interest and popularity not seen since the 1970s. The return to the handmade, driven by our increasingly digital lives, means there are now more makers, sellers, and collectors than ever. There is also a new desire for unique objects made by hand and the imperfections associated with the marks of the maker. Pottery captures this authenticity in ways no other medium can.

From decorative pieces to the beautiful but functional, to sculptural works pushing the boundaries of the medium, Clay surveys the rich creative output of fifty of the top studio potters from around the world. It is a celebration of a new generation of artisans working in clay, a snapshot not necessarily of what is happening at the elite gallery level but rather a behind-the-scenes look at unique and eclectic offerings, both functional and sculptural, from small studios around the world.

Justine Picardie has spent the last decade puzzling over the truth about Coco Chanel, attempting to peel away the accretions of romance and lies. In this critically acclaimed, bestselling biography she shares the history of the incredible woman who created the way we look now.

Coco Chanel was an extraordinary inventor - she conjured up the little black dress, bobbed hair, trousers for women, contemporary chic, best-selling perfumes, and the most successful fashion brand of all time - but she also invented herself, fashioning the myth of her own life with the same dexterity as her couture. While Chanel was supreme innovator and vendor of all things elegant and beautiful, what lies beneath her own glossy myth is darker and far more disturbing. Living through two World Wars, and surviving Nazi occupation of Paris by embarking on an affair with a German officer, Coco Chanel's life and the evolution of her brand are undeniably interlocked to her actions during this treacherous time.

In this book, Justine Picardie brings the mysterious Gabrielle Chanel out of hiding, to celebrate her great achievements, at the same time as casting a clear eye over her transgressions. She examines Chanel's enduring afterlife, as well as her remarkable life, uncovering the consequences of what she covered up, unpicking the seams between truth and legend, yet keeping intact the real fabric of her past.
