A gorgeous book focussing on Frida Kahlo 's wardrobe - as distinctive and instantly recognisable as her much-celebrated art.

Frida Kahlo (1907-1958) is an artist with a unique international appeal. Her instantly recognizable work draws extensively on her life and her extraordinarily personal reflections upon it.

On Kahlo 's death, her husband Diego Rivera ordered that her most private possessions be locked away until fifteen years after his death. The bathroom in which her belongings were stored in fact remained unopened until 2004. Through this incredible archive, Frida Kahlo will give the reader a unique window into Kahlo 's life. It will focus on the personal, combining her prosthetics and clothes with self-portraits, diary entries and letters to build an intimate portrait of the artist through her possessions, setting this in the context of her political and social beliefs.

Frida Kahlo at Home explores the influence of Mexican culture and tradition, La Casa Azul and other places Frida Kahlo called home, on her life and work.

La Casa Azul, now one of the most visited museums in Mexico City, was the artist's birthplace and the home where she grew up, lived with her husband Diego Rivera for a number of years, and also where she died, in a room on the upper floor. She spent long periods of time in the house convalescing, first in 1918 when she contracted polio and again, at the age of 18, after the trolley accident which left her badly injured. Confined to her bed in casts and orthopedic devices and in constant pain and discomfort, she began to paint as a way to occupy her time.

After marrying Rivera, Frida moved out of the Blue House, living in Mexico and abroad, moving for a brief time to the United States, until eventually returning to her childhood home.

Fully illustrated, the book features Frida's paintings together with archive images and family photographs, objects and artefacts she collected and photographs of the surrounding landscape to provide an insight into how these places shaped this much-loved artist and how the homes and landscapes of her life relate to her work.

Gainsborough (1727-88) lived as if electricity shot through his sinews and crackled at his finger ends. He was a gentle and empathetic family man, but had a volatility that could lead him to slash his paintings, and a loose libidinous way of speaking, writing and behaving that shocked many deeply. He would be dynamite in polite society today. In this exhilarating new biography - the first in decades - James Hamilton reveals Gainsborough in his many contexts: the easy-going Suffolk lad, transported to the heights of fashion by a natural talent; the rake-on-the-make in London, learning his art in the shadow of Hogarth; falling on his feet when he married a duke's daughter with a handsome private income; the top society-portrait painter in Bath and London who earned huge sums by bringing the right people into his studio; the charming and amusing friend of George III and Queen Charlotte who nevertheless kept clear of the aristocratic embrace.

There has been much art history written about this chameleon of art, but with fresh insights into original sources, Gainsborough: A Portrait transforms our understanding of this fascinating man, and enlightens the century that bore him.

Biographies and art works of George Tetlow and Mark and Jill Pearse.

GEORGE TETLOW left the grey chill of Manchester in 1959 and migrated to Australia aged twenty-four. The amateur artist endured a warm Aussie welcome in a Mount Isa copper smelter, after which he worked for three years at Woomera. But people noted his artistic talent, and encouraged him to take it seriously. He went to the South Australian School of Art as a mature-age student, worked as an illustrator for Rigby publishers, then returned to the art school as a lecturer for twenty years, becoming loved as a teacher and well-known for his figurative drawing. In his fifties he trekked in the Himalaya for forty-five days -- thereafter travel significantly influenced and extended his subject matter, media and palette. Back in Australia, he soon retired to create art full-time, travel more and, with his wife, Erika Inhofer, set up Studio 13 in Normanville to showcase fine arts.

The Australian-born JILL AND MARK PEARSE had childhoods in Victoria, Mark in the country and Jill in suburban Melbourne. They were young when they studied at the art school of the National Gallery of Victoria, and were still very impressionable when, soon after, they left for Europe on Mark's travelling scholarship. They settled in Adelaide when they returned to Australia, and Mark became an art master at St Peter's College where he also taught himself to pot. He became addicted to pottery making and, with Jill, established Pearse's Uraidla Pottery, and then Pearse's Pottery at Bungala House in Yankalilla. Thus by separate paths, those couples came to live south of Adelaide in the Yankalilla district, an area known for its many artists.

In Lorraine McLoughlin's biography, George Tetlow and Mark and Jill Pearse -- Lives in Art, she has explored three particular lives and journeys, and reproduced images of their creative results. The back cover contains a DVD of interviews with them in their studios or homes.

'When I got to New Mexico that was mine. As soon as I saw it, that was my country.'

Despite Georgia's own assertions that a biographic interpretation of her work will yield little insight, it is plain to see that the various places Georgia called home had a massive impact on her artwork.
Beginning with her teaching career in Texas, through her time in New York City and Lake George (in the company of her husband, Alfred Stieglitz) and ending at her two desert ranches in New Mexico, Georgia O'Keeffe at Home explores the influence of the various landscapes and cities Georgia inhabited - as well as the places she travelled to - on her life and artwork.
Fully illustrated, the book features Georgia's drawings and paintings together with archival imagery of her houses, friends and family from the Georgia O'Keeffe Museum in Santa Fe, New Mexico, including photographs by Alfred Stieglitz and other notable contemporaries.

Hans Heysen is one of the giants of Australian art who transformed the way we see the Australian landscape during the first two decades of Federation. Back from four years of study in Europe at the end of 1903, he achieved an astronomical success within twelve months of his return. Two major works were acquired by State Galleries and he was awarded the Wynne Prize, the first of nine times. In December 1904 he married Sallie Bartels who became his perfect partner. They moved to Hahndorf in 1908 and in 1912 acquired The Cedars, a house and property which proved to be the ideal home for Heysen the painter and his large family.

Heysen's art is the result of great technical skill and his passion and understanding of the Australian landscape. What to others was 'the bush', for Heysen it was the miraculous and mystical essence of nature. He was inspired by light and the landscape of Hahndorf and the Adelaide Hills, which he transformed into an Arcadian vision that can still haunt us with its sense of timeless beauty. Not only did he produce a range of masterpieces such as Red Gold (1912); Droving into the Light (1921) and The Three Gums (1921), but he also ventured into the Flinders Ranges in 1926, where he discovered a primordial landscape. Some of his finest works are the result of his many visits to the interior of the continent, which captured his imagination to the end of his life.

The author, Lou Klepac, has had a long association with Hans Heysen. When he became Curator of Paintings at the Art Gallery of South Australia in 1966, Hans Heysen was still on the Art Gallery Board of Trustees. He invited Klepac to The Cedars and showed him through the studio. He has seen all the major exhibitions devoted to Heysen since 1966 and in 1988 he organised a comprehensive exhibition, 'Hans Heysen Drawings and Watercolours' for the S.H. Ervin Gallery, Sydney.

The book has 149 plates, with numerous illustrations and photographs, and with special sections devoted to major paintings. It includes detailed biographical notes on the artist as well as informative quotes from the artist's letters.

A parallel look at Hockney and Van Gogh's love of nature as expressed in their landscape paintings.

Landscape has become an important theme for David Hockney. The landscapes in this catalgoue show a series of in-depth observations of the changing seasons and the way in which light, space and nature are constantly in motion. They are reminiscent of the landscapes of Vincent van Gogh, including his monumental Wheatfield with Crows and The Harvest. This book pays particular attention to these beautiful landscapes alongside Van Gogh's depiction of nature, with a special focus on technique, perspective and colour, and the way Van Gogh and Hockney use these `formal' elements to create their particular view on the world surrounding them.

The real revolution in the arts first took place not, as is commonly supposed, in the 1920s to the accompaniment of the Charleston, black jazz and mint juleps, but more quietly and intimately, in the shadow of the windmills - artificial and real - and in the cafés and cabarets of Montmartre during the first decade of the century. The cross-fertilization of painting, writing, music and dance produced a panorama of activity characterized by the early works of Picasso, Braque, Matisse, Derain, Vlaminck and Modigliani, the appearance of the Ballet Russe and the salons of Gertrude Stein.

In In Montmartre, Sue Roe vividly brings to life the bohemian world of art in Paris between 1900-1910.

An absorbing, gossipy account of the birth of Surrealism and the painters, writers, and artists who lived, loved and worked together in Paris in the 1920s.

In Montparnasse is Sue Roe's lively account of the birth of Surrealism. Informative and entertaining, the book begins with Marcel Duchamp and the wonderfully eccentric and avant garde Dada movement, going on to tell the story of the moving death of Modigliani, the birth of Surrealist photography with Man Ray and his muse Kiki de Montparnasse, the love triangle between writer Paul Eluard, his wife Gala and artist Max Ernst, and finally the arrival of Salvador Dali in Paris in 1929. In Montparnasse describes the extraordinary, revolutionary work these artists undertook as much as the salons, café life friendships, rows and love affairs that were their background.

Joseph Banks accompanied Captain Cook on his first voyage round the world from 1768 to 1771. A gifted and wealthy young naturalist, Banks collected exotic flora from Madeira, Brazil, Tierra del Fuego, the Society Islands, New Zealand, Australia and Java, bringing back over 1300 species that had never been seen or studied by Europeans. On his return, Banks commissioned over 700 superlative engravings between 1772 and 1784.

Known collectively as Banks' Florilegium, they are some of the most precise and exquisite examples of botanical illustration ever created. The Florilegium was never published in Banks' lifetime, and it was not until 1990 that a complete set in colour was issued in a boxed edition (limited to 100 copies) under the direction of the British Museum (Natural History).

It is from these prints that the present selection is made, directed by David Mabberley, who has provided expert botanical commentaries, with additional texts by art historian Mel Gooding, setting the works in context as a perfect conjunction of nature, science and art. An afterword by Joseph Studholme describes the history of the modern printing.

Journeys into the Wild is a poetic escape to a fragile and breathtaking wilderness, with celebrated photographer Peter Dombrovskis as our guide.

A silhouette of a damaged twisted Pencil Pine, wearing a fine dusting of fresh snow and precariously positioned above the Pool of Siloam in the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, is like a portrait of a lively old friend. A fresh ice sheet, uniquely patterned, is coloured by the alpenglow, as the day’s first sunlight reflects on a Cradle Mountain tarn. A flowering white Olearia pinifolia at the base of a massive boulder on Mount Wellington is a study in permanency and transience. Here, too, are photographs of the Snowy Mountains and the tropical rainforests of Queensland’s Daintree and Hinchinbrook Island, Fiji and Borneo.

Bob Brown and Peter Dombrovskis forged their friendship in the battle to save the Gordon and Franklin rivers. As a founder of the Wilderness Society, Bob organised the blockade of dam works on the Franklin, recruiting Peter and his iconic photography to make the case for conservation over profit. During the campaign, Bob accompanied Peter on one of his kayak trips down the Franklin and observed his process as a photographer. Peter would go on to take one of the most famous photographs in Australian history, Morning Mist, Rock Island Bend, Franklin River, an image that featured in calendars and diaries across Australia and that was integral to the success of the campaign. The two remained friends until Peter’s death in 1996.
