In his coverage of the post-war history of Australian jazz Clare/Brennan takes the first detailed look at the esoteric levels of jazz culture in Australia.
Jazz haunts of the old El Rocco and Jazz Centre 44, as well as the more recent Basement, are vividly evoked and the interaction of jazz with pop and rock is brilliantly captured.
In addition, Clare/Brennan goes beyond the confines of jazz to conjure up the jitterbugging bodgies, hipsters, communists and fubsy old buffs who have been associated with the development of jazz in Australia.

For thirty years, since the publication of his first novel "Americana," Don DeLillo has lived in the skin of our times. He has found a voice for the forgotten souls who haunt the fringes of our culture and for its larger-than-life, real-life figures. His language is defiantly, radiantly American. Now, to a new century, he has brought "The Body Artist." In this spare, seductive novel, he inhabits the muted world of Lauren Hartke, an artist whose work defies the limits of the body. Lauren is living on a lonely coast, in a rambling rented house, where she encounters a strange, ageless man, a man with uncanny knowledge of her own life. Together they begin a journey into the wilderness of time -- time, love and human perception. As the "Seattle Times" said of DeLillo's last novel, "Masterpieces teach you how to read them." "The Body Artist" is a haunting, beautiful and profoundly moving novel from one of the finest writers of our time.

A magnificent pictorial document of the flowers grown in the greatest German garden of its time, the "Book of Plants" is in a class of its own when it comes to the variety and range of flowers engraved. Working under Basilius Besler, a team of at least ten engravers worked on this massive project, translating in situ and specimen drawings faithfully to copper plates. Nearly four hundred years old, the book has survived through the gardens did not; they were destroyed by invading Swedish troops in 1634. However, in 1998 a reconstruction of the original garden opened to the public in Eichstatt. This facsimile's reproductions - structured by seasons - are taken from a hand-painted edition, one of only a few still extant. In auction, the asking price for a first edition copy is half a million dollars. You can now enjoy its unique qualities for somewhat less.

Bridging Sydney commemorates the 75th anniversary of the opening of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, and celebrates its place in Australia's national identity.

From the earliest concepts for a harbour crossing to the complexities of its construction, the story of the bridge is one that has touched many lives around the world. A remarkable feat of engineering, it signified Australia's industrial and social maturity. The bridge's construction, completed during the Depression, had a dramatic impact on the city, destroying communities and buildings in its path yet at the same time providing jobs and heralding a new and more prosperous era of urban planning, mass transport and technology.

Jamaica, 1976: Seven men storm Bob Marley's house with machine guns blazing. The reggae superstar survives, but leaves Jamaica the following day, not to return for two years.

Inspired by this near-mythic event, A Brief History of Seven Killings is an imagined oral biography, told by ghosts, witnesses, killers, members of parliament, drug dealers, conmen, beauty queens, FBI and CIA agents, reporters, journalists, and even Keith Richards' drug dealer. Marlon James's dazzling novel is a tour de force. It traverses strange landscapes and shady characters, as motivations are examined - and questions asked - in a masterpiece of imagination.

Amid present-day conflagrations, this illuminating book reminds us of the sources, and profound consequences, of Christian fundamentalism in the sixteenth century. Simpson focuses on the cultural transformation in early modern England that allowed common people to read the Bible for the first time. The last wave of fundamentalist reading in the West provoked 150 years of violent upheaval; as we approach a second wave, this powerful book alerts us to our peril.

In 1450, very few English men or women were personally familiar with a book; by 1850, the great majority of people daily encountered books, magazines, or newspapers. This book explores the history of this fundamental transformation, from the arrival of the printing press to the coming of steam. James Raven presents a lively and original account of the English book trade and the printers, booksellers, and entrepreneurs who promoted its development. Viewing print and book culture through the lens of commerce, Raven offers a new interpretation of the genesis of literature and literary commerce in England. He draws on extensive archival sources to reconstruct the successes and failures of those involved in the book trade - a cast of heroes and heroines, villains, and rogues. And, through groundbreaking investigations of neglected aspects of book trade history, Raven thoroughly revises our understanding of the massive popularization of the book and the dramatic expansion of its markets over the centuries.

Caleb Cheeshateaumauk was the first native American to graduate from Harvard College back in 1665. 'Caleb's Crossing' gives voice to his little known story. Caleb, a Wampanoag from the island of Martha's Vineyard, seven miles off the coast of Massachusetts, comes of age just as the first generation of Indians come into contact with English settlers, who have fled there, desperate to escape the brutal and doctrinaire Puritanism of the Massachusetts Bay colony.

The story is told through the eyes of Bethia, daughter of the English minister who educates Caleb in the Latin and Greek he needs in order to enter the college. As Caleb makes the crossing into white culture, Bethia, 14 years old at the novel's opening, finds herself pulled in the opposite direction. Trapped by the narrow strictures of her faith and her gender, she seeks connections with Caleb's world that will challenge her beliefs and set her at odds with her community.
