Classic posters from the last 300 years and the stories behind them.

Posters have always been designed to seek an immediate response. From the time when paper was first affordable, the poster has been used to provoke a direct reaction, whether a public appeal, a legal threat, a call to arms, or the offer of entertainment. Newspapers might have the advantage of ubiquity in spreading the word, but a poster could be tightly targeted by its location.Organised chronologically, 100 Posters That Changed the World charts the history of poster design from their earliest forms as a means of information communication to the more subtle visual communication of the 21st century.

As printing became cheaper, posters were used for more than just promoting the capture of local villains or announcing government decrees. Advertisements took over, citing up-and-coming events, auctions, public meetings, political rallies, sports games, lectures and theatrical performances. The technological leaps from engraving to aquatints to lithography, chromolithography and the offset press, all had their impact on what could be advertised by poster, and the art form took off spectacularly in the late 19th century with the influence of Lautrec and the Paris nightclubs. From then on, the poster became a sophisticated means of visual communication. In the West it was used to sell products - in the East it was used to sell regimes and control behaviour.

Along with historic moments in poster evolution, 100 Posters That Changed the World charts the most impactful designs of the last 300 years - images that communicate a message whether commercial or political, images that sell a film, a musical, a cause or used for decoration, inspiration, motivation and affirmation. The affirmation for teenagers in the 1970s that Farah Fawcett was looking at you.

The last hundred or so years bore witness to the transformation of women's fashion. As women's lives changed dramatically under the shadow of two World Wars, so the style of female dress was altered beyond recognition. From home dressmaking to couture, from rationing to 'The New Look', from the birth of the teenager to mass manufacture, from high society to celebrity culture.

Andy Goldsworthy: Projects presents more than 40 of the artist’s recent large-scale sculptural work from around the world. Using local materials—including stone, clay, and wood—Goldsworthy’s projects are inspired by and interact with the natural landscape. Each project subjects Goldsworthy’s ideas about the work to the brute facts and forces of nature: sunlight, sedimentation, tides, erosion, extremes of heat and cold, and plant growth and decay. Situated mostly throughout Europe and the United States, Goldsworthy’s projects are as beautiful as they are thought-provoking. Each one is accompanied with notes by the artist, and many have not been published previously.

Andy Goldsworthy: Projects is a companion volume to Andy Goldsworthy: Ephemeral Works (2015).

Angela Valamanesh is one of Australia's most intriguing ceramic artists. Her art is aesthetically minimal and cunningly simple, allowing us to interpret universal and ever-perplexing human, animal and organic forms. Valamanesh re-immerses us in the primeval rawness of form and function and, in doing so, the artist succeeds in visualising what many of her contemporaries have avoided - the symbiosis between art and science. 'This book is engaging not only for the informative content of Angela Valamanesh herself but also for the plethora of information it provides in addition to her art practice.' - Jade Wildly, ArtsHub

Annabelle Collett (1955-2019) was a South Australian designer and artist whose work embraced art, design and craft.

Her fashion designs and particularly her dramatic knitwear produced under the Ya Ya Oblique Clothing label attained international recognition. Her work also encompassed furniture design, graphics, costume and interior design, public art and environments. From the early 1990s Annabelle concentrated on making sculptural art pieces about the human form and its coverings, looking at the function and cultural meaning of attire with reference to ideas about gender, the body and sexuality.

In more recent years Collett also investigated notions of camouflage, disguise, pattern and the affect of disruptions to pattern. She is also known for a series of works with recycled and found plastics that focussed on repurposing waste and challenged the widespread adoption of single-use plastics. Having been based in Adelaide most of her career, in 2009 she moved to Clayton Bay where she enjoyed a rich collaboration with communities in the Alexandrina region as well as pursuing her own practice.

The Art Deco style of the early 1930s can be seen as domesticated Cubism. As with cubist paintings, the elements of design were reduced to their minimal essence and applied to everyday items for public consumption. Here Bakelite plastic jewellery and boxes are studied as reflections of this style. The book is a visual garden of Deco design, with hundreds of items photographed in colour and described with their useful purposes, materials, and current values. Bakelite is collected because it is different and fun. This book is important because it demonstrates how the new Art Deco style provided the Depression-ridden world with colour and style in a form most people could afford.
